Founder, Boho Gardens Spa
Mrs Lorato Ramokwena is a purpose-driven entrepreneur, wellness advocate, and Trainer of Trainers, born in Mahalapye, Botswana. At 42 years of age, she is a devoted wife and mother of three sons, embodying both strong family values and visionary leadership.
Her journey into business and wellness is deeply rooted in her passion for prevention, education, and holistic well-being. With a firm belief that true wellness begins before illness, she has dedicated her career to creating solutions that empower individuals to take charge of their health, beauty, and lifestyle.
Mrs Ramokwena holds an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration, along with qualifications in Health Promotion and Education, an ITEC Diploma in Skincare, and a Certificate in Beauty Therapy. This unique combination of business acumen and wellness expertise has enabled her to build and grow impactful ventures, including the successful establishment of Boho Gardens Spa.
Beyond the spa industry, she is also actively involved in farming and training, reflecting her commitment to sustainability, empowerment, and knowledge-sharing within her community.

As the owner of Boho Garden Spa, I have observed that Botswana's massage and wellness industry remains significantly underdeveloped, fragmented, and largely urban-centered. Most operators are concentrated in Gaborone, with a substantial portion of activity occurring informally.
While there is clear and growing demand driven by lifestyle shifts, corporate stress, and tourism, the sector continues to be constrained by the absence of a defined regulatory framework, inconsistent training and certification standards, and a persistent positioning challenge where massage is viewed as a luxury beauty service rather than a legitimate component of preventative healthcare and economic development.
This limits industry credibility, restricts access to insurance and institutional partnerships, and ultimately suppresses investment and growth.
"With the right policy direction, this sector can transition from a marginal service offering into a structured, high-impact contributor to employment, entrepreneurship, and national economic diversification."
I therefore recommend that Government prioritise the formalisation and strategic development of the wellness sector through:
Establishment of a dedicated regulatory framework
Creating clear guidelines for spa operations, hygiene standards, and business practices
Introduction of nationally accredited training and licensing systems
Ensuring therapists meet professional standards and continuous development opportunities
Recognition of massage therapy as part of the broader health and wellness ecosystem
Connecting wellness services with preventive healthcare and medical tourism initiatives
In addition, there is a clear opportunity to integrate wellness into Botswana's tourism value proposition and to support the creation of an industry association that can drive standards, compliance, and advocacy.
The wellness sector represents an underutilised opportunity for Botswana. With strategic policy support and industry collaboration, we can build a credible, professional, and impactful wellness ecosystem that serves both citizens and visitors while contributing meaningfully to economic diversification.
